The Discovery Center's award winning program emphasizes both systematic change and academic achievement. Founded by Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward Newman in 1992 The Discovery Center brings 4th, 5th & 6th grade students from urban centers and surrounding suburban/rural schools together for a year round diversity and teambuilding experience along with a math, science and language arts curriculum. The same students participate in the program from the 4th grade to the 6th grade. The core program takes place during the academic year and culminates with a residential experience for one, 3 or 4.5 days at a neutral site – YMCA Camp Woodstock in Woodstock, CT. Since 2002, 10,949 students have participated in the program.

The campfire is a highlight of the residential session where students from different racial, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds have a chance to sing, perform skits, listen to stories and be entertained together. The experience is always a highlight and an aspect that students remember for many years. You can help support an economically disadvantaged student to participate in this experience by joining other donors by making a $10.00 donation per month to The Discovery Center. Your donation of $120.00 or higher per year will make a difference in the life of a student and prepare him/her for a diverse world and global economy.
