The Fund Raising Goal for July 1 – December 31, 2008 is $400,000.

The Discovery Center is an IRS approved non - profit that is supported by individuals, corporations, private and public foundations and government agencies. Each donation is greatly appreciated and directly benefits approximately 1,800 students who participate in a year round educational diversity program and curriculum.

Over 96% of the funds donated are designated to support the program. The cost per student on an annual basis is approximately $500.

The IRS identification number for The Discovery Center is 02 - 0567674 and the State of Connecticut nonprofit registration number is 12108.

Ways to Give to The Discovery Center.

There are many different ways to support The Discovery Center.

Cash/Checks:
Nothing could be easier than making a gift of cash or check to The Discovery Center. It is the most common gift and one you probably think of first. Cash/Check donations are generally deductible if you itemize in the year of the contribution, up to percent of your adjusted gross income. Excess deduction can often be carried for the next five years.

Gifts of Securities:
Stocks and publicly traded securities are easy to give and offer great advantages. You can transfer the stock to The Discovery Center electronically through your broker or mail to us the stock certificate and the signed stock power for each certificate. It is recommended that the certificate and stock powers be mailed separately. Stocks to use for charitable giving are those that you have held for more than a year and have increased greatly in value, particularly those producing a low yield.

Bequests:
Bequests are the most popular type of planned giving. Anything you leave to The Discovery Center will make a difference in the life of a student and could reduce the size of your taxable estate. You can leave a bequest of a specified sum of money or a particular piece of property to The Discovery Center.

Life Insurance:
You may have some life insurance policy that you may not need. You can either donate the life insurance policy or name The Discovery Center as the beneficiary of the insurance policy.

Tangible Personal Property:
Many items of tangible personal property make wonderful charitable gifts for The Discovery Center. Items such as children's books, back packs, and workbooks are truly appreciated by the students. Other items of significant value, $5,000 and above, can be tax deductible depending on if The Discovery Center can use the property and the appraisal value.

Matching Gifts:
Double your dollar by having your employer match your gift. Obtain a matching gift form or instructions for requesting matching gifts online from your company's human resources department. Complete the form and mail the form with your gift to The Discovery Center. By participating in a corporate matching gift program your donation will double the value of your gift.

Real Estate:
A gift of real estate offers you the opportunity to make a significant charitable contribution with a tax - friendly outcome. There are several ways to donate real estate depending on your situation: outright gifts and retained life estates.

Memorial, Honorarium and Holidays:
One of the most appreciated donations is a memorial donation that recognizes ones life, a honorarium that recognizes a special occasion - birthday, anniversary, bar mitzvah or wedding or for a holiday in lieu of gifts.

The donation will help support a student or students' participation in the year round educational diversity program for young people from different racial, cultural and socio - economic backgrounds. The Discovery Center will notify the recipient or family of the donation with a special letter with recognition for the donor. The donor receives an acknowledgement letter with the donation. For donations of over $100 the recipient or family will receive special recognition on the web site and the newsletter.

Holiday Donation:
Recently it has become increasingly more popular to make a donation in lieu of gifts for special Holidays. A special letter is sent to the recipient recognizing the donation as a holiday gift from the donor. All holidays are included.
